We Are The World, considerato un pezzo storico, è nato nel 1985 grazie a un’idea di Harry Belafonte e Michael Jackson. Questi ultimi hanno dato vita al progetto umanitario USA For Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa), un gruppo di 45 artisti, per la maggior parte statunitensi, che registrò il singolo We Are the World e dopo poco l’album omonimo: la canzone fu numero uno delle classifiche sia negli Stati Uniti che in Regno Unito in aprile.
We Are The World: la storia
Le origini di We Are The World derivano dal desiderio di Belafonte di dare la possibilità agli artisti americani di unire le loro forze a sostegno delle vittime in Africa. I considerevoli profitti ricavati dalle vendite dell’album andarono infatti all’associazione “USA for Africa Foundation“, che li donò per contribuire alla soluzione di gravi problemi in Africa, fra i quali una carestia che stava colpendo la popolazione etiope.
Il brano fu lanciato il 7 marzo 1985 con la distribuzione curata dalla Columbia Records e le prime 800 mila copie del singolo furono vendute praticamente subito. A tutto ciò, bisogna aggiungere che il 5 aprile 1985, la canzone fu suonata da oltre 5000 radio in assoluta contemporanea.
Il brano fu scritto da Jackson insieme a Lionel Ritchie, con la produzione curata da Quincy Jones, un trio davvero talentuoso. Ritchie scelse di chiamare un altro artista del calibro di Stevie Wonder, che diede vita a una sorta di passaparola che portò alla partecipazione di tante altre star del mondo della musica mondiale. Da Bob Dylan a Diana Ross, da Paul Simon a Ray Charles, passando per Tina Turner, Billy Joel, Cindy Lauper, Kenny Rogers, Dionne Warwick e tanti altri ancora. Il progetto assunse proporzioni straordinarie con oltre quaranta artisti complessivi.
Col passare degli anni, We Are The World è diventato una sorta di inno mondiale che rende possibile alle persone riconoscersi all’interno di una semplice canzone. Il successo di questo brano è stato talmente importante che ha consentito a USA For Africa di proseguire la sua attività fino a oggi, con gli introiti e le royalties ricevute col passare dei decenni.

Dalla traduzione di We Are The World si evince l’importanza di un messaggio universale fatto di pace e fratellanza. Il brano si apre con un invito all’unione tra i popoli, nonostante ci sia molta gente che perde la vita per la fame e per le guerre. Si dice che sia giunto il tempo di incitare alla vita e di cambiare le cose, dato che in una situazione del genere non possiamo andare avanti fingendo di giorno in giorno.
Tutti gli esseri umani fanno parte della grande famiglia di Dio e bisogna vivere all’insegna dell’amore, ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno. Le strofe proseguono con inviti a dare il proprio cuore per superare ogni difficoltà sulla Terra e sostenere le persone in difficoltà, in modo che le loro vite diventino più forti e libere. Infine, viene sottolineato un ulteriore monito a essere tutti uniti, perché solo in questo caso la situazione potrà finalmente cambiare.
