April 25, La Russa: Antifascism essential for the return of democracy

Rome, 24 Apr. (askanews) - "It is not only my personal conviction, but also that of the political party from which I come, of respect and full adherence to the values of the Constitution and therefore of respect for the date that saw the return of freedom." This was stated in the chamber of Palazzo Madama by the President of the Senate, Ignazio La Russa, during the celebration for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation.

“I read – continued La Russa, referring to the ‘turning point’ promoted by Gianfranco Fini who gave life to the National Alliance and the overcoming of the Italian Social Movement – a part of a document that was important to me, in my life, written in Fiuggi with great sincerity and great passion, where without reticence we affirmed that anti-fascism was the historically essential moment for the return of democratic values that fascism had trampled upon… But what matters – continued the President of the Senate – is that the sincerity, the depth that must unite us in remembering this date is such that it must be a moment of unity and not a moment of division”, reiterated La Russa.

At the end of the celebration, the Senate chamber then observed, at La Russa's request, "a few moments of reflection" to conclude the celebration for the 80th anniversary of the Liberation.

“I invite you to stand in unison,” La Russa said, “to celebrate April 25, 80 years ago, but to remember together the fallen, all the fallen of that terrible phase of our history, adding to them the memory of the fallen of all wars, even those dramatically still underway, so that ours may be a hymn to the hope of peace and harmony, which I hope this April 25 will be able to express with great strength.”
