Rome, 24 April (Adnkronos) – "Today, sobriety is required in celebrating the Liberation, in my opinion, not because it was requested from above, but because in our consciences this year, for the first time, a deep concern prevails if we look to the future. Sobriety, therefore, but with a cry of alarm. Eighty years ago and in the eighty years that have passed since then, we have all developed, in our country and I believe throughout Europe, a great gratitude towards that country that more than any other contributed, with the great sacrifice of its men - without forgetting the essential contribution of the forces of the Resistance in Italy - to liberate Italy and Europe from Nazi-fascism.

The United States, in the eighty years since, has been an absolutely fundamental point of defense and reference for all of us, in the wide-ranging alternation of political positions between Democratic and Republican presidents, very conservative and very progressive. For the first time, the United States has been creating significant concerns for a few months: many behaviors both internally and in terms of arrogance in international relations are a signal that I believe should greatly worry all of us". This was stated by Senator for Life Mario Monti, speaking during the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Liberation.

"I would like, echoing what the Prime Minister of Canada said a few weeks ago, that from Italy - added the former Prime Minister - the formation of what I would call a league of liberal democracies could start, without structures and without frills, because there are many countries that are not part of the European Union such as Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, that feel lost in the face of the current behavior, which we hope is reversible, of the American administration. We must do everything we can so that, with Europe, that part of the world that still recognizes itself in liberal democracy also has a thread of dialogue and unity to face this difficulty".
