Federica Pellegrini was accused of being "arrogant and overbearing" after the broadcast of "Physical: 100 to 1," the Netflix reality show. The Olympic champion was eliminated just shy of the semifinals, and, as fiercely competitive as she always is, she didn't hide her disappointment at her elimination. Her reaction, however, sparked a wave of criticism on social media.
In fact, users accused her of being unsportsmanlike and unfair.
What sparked controversy were his comments directed at his teammate, Abou Kane. Upon learning of the verdict, Pellegrini blamed Abou for the defeat, claiming he had lost crucial seconds in removing his harness and passing it to another team member.
"You hadn't finished your work," she pointed out. "Everyone has their say, but I've done mine," he replied, trying not to stir up controversy.
The swimmer, who was attacked in the comments on her social media profile, clarified that she never doubted her partner's commitment and explained that her reaction came after a joke Abou made, which, however, was not included in the final edit of the reality show.
Responding to some comments, Pellegrini clarified: "I don't doubt he gave it his all, but I repeat: my 'sentence' came after a terrible joke of his. If he hadn't said anything, I certainly wouldn't have said anything. The rest is show."
The champion had already addressed the issue a few days earlier on her Instagram Stories, explaining that part of the exchange would be edited out and that, as a result, only her response would be seen by the public, without the full context. Pellegrini also emphasized in the caption of the Instagram post: "Sport has turned me into a cruel person. The rest is just background noise, edited footage, and show business."
