The handover

This morning, at Ciampino military airport, the ceremony for the changeover of leadership of the Italian Air Force took place. Air Force General Antonio Conserva took over from Air Force General Luca Goretti, in an event attended by the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, and the Chief of Defense Staff, General Luciano Portolano.

This handover marks a crucial moment for the Air Force, which is facing increasingly complex challenges in the current context.

The words of the Minister of Defense

During the ceremony, Minister Crosetto underlined the importance of strengthening the integration between the armed forces and the national industrial system. “It is essential to enhance internal skills and build a model that combines efficiency, transparency and planning,” he said. Crosetto highlighted the need to have people ready to question themselves, since current times require an innovative and critical approach. The synergy between the different components of the armed forces, according to the minister, must generate exponential value, not be limited to a simple sum of contributions.

General Goretti's contribution

General Portolano recalled the multidimensional and collaborative approach that characterized General Goretti's mandate. Under his leadership, the Air Force demonstrated remarkable versatility, ensuring the safety of significant events, such as the funeral of Pope Francis and the conclave that led to the election of Pope Leo XIV. General Goretti, in his farewell speech, expressed gratitude to the men and women of the Air Force, praising their silent and admirable work, both in Italy and abroad.

Future challenges for General Conserva

General Antonio Conserva, in his speech, said he felt “honored” by the new assignment and stressed the importance of capitalizing on past experiences. “We must innovate and equip ourselves with capabilities that express an adequate level of deterrence,” he said, highlighting the need to also confront distant malicious actors. His vision for the Air Force focuses on a future in which innovation and preparedness are at the heart of operations, thus ensuring national security in an ever-changing global context.
