The Role of Government in Foreign Policy
In an increasingly complex international context, Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani wanted to clarify the role of the Italian government in defining foreign policy. During the Forza Italia convention in Palermo, Tajani stated that “foreign policy is made by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister”.
This statement underlines the importance of a clear and united line in the management of international relations, avoiding that personal initiatives can confuse the official positions of the government.
Personal Initiatives and Legitimacy
The deputy prime minister also commented on the recent phone call between Matteo Salvini and US Vice President JD Vance, calling it “legitimate.” According to Tajani, it is normal for members of the government to have relationships with representatives of other nations, but it is essential that such interactions do not overlap with established political lines. “The rest are legitimate personal initiatives,” he said, highlighting the need to maintain a distinction between individual actions and the official positions of the Italian government.
Strengthening ties with the United States
The call between Salvini and Vance, described as “between friends,” was aimed at strengthening the partnership between Rome and Washington. This comes at a time when there are rumors of a possible mission by Giorgia Meloni to the White House, an event that could further consolidate ties between the two countries. Tajani confirmed that the government is actively working to maintain and develop solid relations with the United States, a strategic partner for Italy.
