Italy's position on European defence and rearmament

Map of Italy with focus on European defense

Prime Minister Meloni underlines the importance of defense and international cooperation

The European Security Context

Strengthen defensive capabilities

Meloni clarified that the term “rearmament” can be misleading. The goal is not simply to buy weapons, but rather to produce them and improve the infrastructure needed for effective defense. According to the prime minister, it is essential to also consider aspects such as operational capacity and supply chains, which go beyond simply strengthening arsenals. Without an integrated approach, she warned, it is not possible to guarantee adequate defense.

Spending on security and public services

Another key point raised by Meloni concerns the perception that increased spending on security could lead to cuts to public services. The prime minister rejected this simplification, stressing that resources for health, education and welfare are not limited by defense spending, but by past political choices. She said that Italy does not intend to divert funds from cohesion programs for defense, highlighting a commitment to maintaining a balance between security and essential services.

The conflict in Ukraine and Italy's role

On the war in Ukraine, Meloni expressed her support for President Mattarella and Italian soldiers, stressing the importance of recognizing the aggressors and victims of the conflict. She clarified that sending Italian troops to Ukraine is not currently on the agenda and described sending European troops as a complex and risky option. The prime minister reiterated the importance of supporting the Ukrainian people and welcomed efforts to start peace negotiations.

Concerns for Gaza

Finally, Meloni expressed concern about the situation in Gaza, in particular the resumption of fighting and the interruption of the ceasefire by Israel. She stressed the importance of working for the release of hostages and a lasting end to hostilities, highlighting the need to restore humanitarian assistance in the Strip. Italy's position, according to Meloni, must be to promote peace and stability in all areas of conflict.
