Berlin, November 15 (Adnkronos) – "When we recall the history of German-Italian friendship, we cannot ignore the dark chapters. In past years, the joint commemoration of the crimes committed during National Socialism by Germans, their accomplices, and their collaborators has always been particularly dear to both you, dear Sergio, and me. We must continue to keep alive the memory of the victims of war and tyranny, especially now! Therefore, Mr. President, I am very grateful that you will be speaking in the German Bundestag tomorrow on the occasion of the main commemoration of the National Day of Mourning."

This was stated by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, during the ceremony in Berlin, together with the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, for the presentation of the 'Presidents' Award for Municipal Cooperation between Italy and Germany'.

"If we remember together," added the German President, "we have the opportunity to learn from the past. If we build bridges together, we have the opportunity to find better paths toward the future. This is demonstrated by the town twinning agreements, whose richness of ideas and commitment we today recognize!"
