Rome, October 14 (Adnkronos) – "I would like to reaffirm that true, lasting peace lies in the souls of people. Otherwise, resentment smolders beneath the ashes of the end of violence, ready to flare up again at the first opportunity, only to realize that the end of violence is, unfortunately, a parenthesis between two explosions."
The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, stated this during his meeting with Pope Leo XIV.
"Ukraine and the Middle East," the Head of State added, "are just two of the main war zones, those closest to us. The number of ongoing conflicts and humanitarian crises is unfortunately much higher, as Your Holiness has repeatedly reminded us. Indeed, in the face of such brutality, a risk we cannot underestimate is that—alongside the many who feel called to the work of building peace—part of public opinion will become accustomed to the suffering of millions of human beings, and will no longer stir their consciences."
"We don't just aspire to an end to the violence: we can't be satisfied with that. We aspire," Mattarella concluded, "to a condition that will allow people to resume a stable path of peace and collaboration in the life of the world."
