From this year the access to Medicine: for the first time, registrations open without the traditional test entry. The new reform, promoted by the Minister of Universities Anna Maria Bernini, aims to make entry to the degree course more inclusive and flexible, introducing an open semester that allows students to begin their studies without preliminary selection.
This innovation marks an important turning point in the Italian university system.
Registration for Medicine begins without entrance tests: the open semester debuts
Il measure eliminates entrance tests and restricted places, introducing the "Open Semester" with free access, which requires simultaneous enrollment in a similar course of study. At the time of enrollment, which must be done on the Universitaly platform from today until the 25 July, students will have to indicate the location chosen for the open semester and the related course of reference, as well as selecting at least 9 alternative locations (for a total of 10) and 10 preferences for continuing in the related course in the second semester.
The reform, financed with over 20 million euros last year, provides for a further increase in available places: the Ministry of University and Research has allocated another 50 million euros, of which 30 million in the Ordinary Financing Fund and 20 million extra, to increase the number of admitted students by 3.000 units.

Le organisers' activities first semester teaching will start on September 1st and will end by November. Universities, exercising their autonomy, will define the methods of delivery of the courses. Starting from the academic year 2026-2027, universities will also be required to update the study plans for related courses.
The Open Semester can be attended up to a maximum of three times, even non-consecutively. The three disciplines provided for are: Chemistry and biochemistry propaedeutics, Physics and Biology, each of which awards 6 university training credits (CFU), for a total of 18. By passing all three exams, students will obtain full recognition of the credits if they enroll in the related course.
At the end of the semester, students will take the profit exams for each subject. The tests will be uniform at national level and will be held simultaneously on the same day. Two appeals are scheduled: the first on November 20, the second on December 10.
Each exam will consist of 31 questions per subject: 15 multiple choice with five options (only one correct) and 16 fill-in-the-blank questions. The expected duration of each test is 45 minutes. The results obtained will contribute to the formation of the national ranking, with grades expressed in thirtieths and the possibility of honors. To be included in the ranking, it is necessary to obtain at least 18/30 in each exam.
The evaluation provides 1 point for each correct answer, 0 for unanswered questions and a penalty of 0,25 points for each error. The maximum overall score for the three tests is 93 points. Students not admitted to the second semester, but who have obtained at least 18/30 in each exam, they will still be able to continue on the similar course, with full recognition of the acquired CFUs.
Enrollment in the first semester of the related course is free and does not oblige attendance, if this is required by university regulations. Related courses include those of the degrees in Biotechnology (L-2), Biological Sciences (L-13), Pharmacy and Industrial Pharmacy (LM-13), Zootechnical Sciences and Animal Production Technologies (L-38), as well as selected courses in the Health Professions, chosen annually by the MUR based on objective criteria.
