Rome, October 9 (Adnkronos Salute) – "The metastatic breast cancer numbers reflect very well the effective functioning of breast care centers in Italy. The ever-increasing number of patients living with metastatic breast cancer demonstrates that they recover more often and have a more prolonged chronic disease. This is the result of the positive progress we are making throughout Italy thanks to the implementation of the PDTAs at breast care centers."

This was stated by Corrado Tinterri, head of the Breast Unit at Humanitas in Rozzano (Milan) and vice president of Senonetwork, at the presentation of the metastatic breast cancer awareness campaign "Patients, up to a certain point." Presented today in Rome, ahead of National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day (October 13), the campaign is organized by Europa Donna Italia with the patronage of AIOM (Italian Association of Medical Oncology), the AIOM Foundation, Senonetwork – the network of Italian breast care centers – and the patient associations Andos Onlus, Ropi – Italian Oncology Patient Network, and Oltre il Nastro Rosa.

"A woman with metastatic breast cancer finds everything she needs in breast care centers: the best treatments, pilot programs, and medications she might otherwise not be able to find at other hospitals. And all of this obviously leads to a prolongation of her good quality of life and of life itself," Tinterri explained. "The numbers we see today in Italy, among the best in Europe, are therefore no coincidence."

"Beyond prevention, which is extremely important, I would also talk about quality of care. Prevention is essential, but if it isn't followed by high-quality care and good clinical practice, we risk losing all the benefits gained from prevention. Within our breast care centers, we ensure the best possible clinical practice, with indicators, controls, and audits at both regional and ministerial levels. This has helped raise the bar for quality, especially for women with complex conditions, such as metastatic disease," she concluded.
