New York, June 18 (askanews) – Brad Lander, one of the Democratic candidates for mayor of New York, was arrested by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents in an immigration court in Manhattan. The politician, who came to the court to assist migrants threatened with deportation, was handcuffed in the middle of a courtroom.
The footage shows Brad Lander, who is also the city's finance director, in a suit and tie, being forcibly arrested: "You do not have the authority to arrest an American citizen," Lander tells the officers, some of whom were wearing masks, as shown in the video shared on social media by Brad Lander himself.
Lander was later released.
The violent episode recalls that of Alex Padilla, the Democratic senator from California who was stopped and handcuffed in Los Angeles while trying to ask a question during a press conference by Homeland Security chief Kirsti Noem.
