An evening of terror shook Ozieri, a town of about 9.700 inhabitants in the province of Sassari. A 64-year-old man turned on the gas tap in his home, closed the door behind him and walked away. Before fleeing, he called the emergency number 112, declaring: “I killed my wife.”
This statement immediately activated emergency procedures, bringing the Carabinieri and Fire Brigade to the scene.
Timely intervention by law enforcement
Arriving at the scene of the accident, in the Tramentu district, the Fire Department broke down the door of the apartment, finding the house empty and filled with gas. The firefighters promptly closed the gas valve, securing the premises to avoid an explosion. In the meantime, the Carabinieri of the Ozieri Company, under the direction of Major Gabriele Tronca, began searching for the man, managing to contact his wife, from whom he was separated, by telephone to make sure he was okay.
Arrest and criminal record
The police wasted no time and, after about an hour of searching, managed to intercept and arrest the 64-year-old. This individual is not new to the judicial news: only a few days earlier, he had been convicted by the Court of Sassari for damaging the commemorative plaque of the carabiniere Walter Frau, killed in 1995 during a firefight with a gang of robbers. The gravity of the situation highlighted not only the immediate risk to his wife's life, but also the worrying profile of the man, already known for violent behavior.
Reflections on safety and prevention
This episode raises questions about home safety and the need for preventive interventions to avoid similar crisis situations. Local authorities and law enforcement agencies are called upon to reflect on how to improve communication and support for victims of domestic violence. It is essential that people in dangerous situations can count on an effective and timely protection system, to prevent tragedies that could have devastating consequences.
