A volcano under observation
Campi Flegrei, a vast volcanic complex located between Naples and Pozzuoli, is currently the focus of the scientific community. In recent years, the area has shown signs of increasing activity, with an increase in seismic tremors and a rise in the ground that is causing concern among residents and authorities.
The Civil Protection has therefore decided to update the national emergency plan, establishing detailed procedures to deal with a possible eruption.
The evacuation plan
The heart of the emergency strategy is the evacuation of the population, which must take place within a maximum of 72 hours of the alert. This plan provides for the division of the territory into a “red zone” and a “yellow zone”. The red zone includes seven municipalities, including Pozzuoli and Bacoli, where approximately 500.000 people live and must evacuate immediately. The yellow zone, on the other hand, includes areas at risk of volcanic ash fallout, inhabited by an additional 800.000 residents, who may have to stay at home or evacuate depending on the intensity of the eruption.
Preparations and safety measures
To ensure an orderly evacuation, the Municipalities have prepared Removal Plans that indicate the assembly points, times and available means of transport. The evacuation will take place in stages, to avoid congestion and ensure assistance to the most vulnerable people. The evacuated citizens will be transferred to Regions twinned with Campania, where they will be welcomed in public facilities, hotels and schools. The Civil Protection, in collaboration with Prefectures, Municipalities and Law Enforcement Agencies, will manage the emergency, ensuring that each family receives timely information via IT-alert messages, sirens and official channels.
