During the excavations a Pompei an archaeological discovery of great importance has been made in insula 10 of Regio IX, where a vast thermal complex was found, connected to a banquet hall. It stands out as one of the largest and most complex examples of spa private never identified in the Pompeian domus explored so far.

Il complex thermal bath found in Pompeii stands out for its vast extension and la structural complexity. During the exploration phase, archaeologists identified several areas intended for specific functions, including calidarium, tepidarium and frigidarium, as well as an apodyterium, or changing room.
The walls decorated in the II and III Style testify to the prestigious past of this residence. It is evident that those who lived there must have been part of the city's elite in the last years of their lives and felt the need to create an environment capable of hosting many people, offering them sumptuous banquets and the opportunity to enjoy the spa for relaxation. These environments were designed to host up to thirty people, as indicated by the benches present. A noteworthy element is the cold room, which is characterized by a 10×10 meter peristyle and a large central basin, typical of Roman baths.
The strategic position of the baths, located near a convivial hall, evokes social and political practices, similar to those described in the famous “Satyricon” by Petronius. This space was used by the Roman elite not only for the personal pleasure, but also as a place for celebrate events which strengthened political and social alliances, consolidating their prestige.
Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, confirmed that it is one of the most extensive and complex private thermal facilities ever documented in the ancient city.

"The excavation of the rooms in question, and in particular of the peristyle, was achieved thanks to a innovative execution mode, which made it possible to reach the floor level without having to dismantle the unstable architectural elements of the colonnade”, declared the Director of the works, Anna Onesti, as reported by ANSA.
This innovative excavation method will ensure the preservation of significant architectural details for future restoration and study projects.
