Pope Francis' Funeral: A Deep Bond with the Origins

Funeral of Pope Francis with religious symbols and tributes

The Piedmontese community unites to honor the memory of the Holy Father

An unbreakable bond with the roots

The passing of Pope Francis has left an unfillable void not only in the Catholic Church, but also among his family and the community that saw him born. Remo Demergasso, a relative of the Pontiff, wanted to pay homage to his memory by attending the funeral in the Teo district of Cabella Ligure, a small village that represents the origins of the Holy Father.

His great-great-grandmother and Bergoglio's were sisters, a bond that underscores how important family roots are to the figure of Francis.

A simple but meaningful ceremony

Although the funeral rite was simplified compared to previous ones, Remo expressed his opinion on the ceremony, considering it excessively redundant. "It seemed too elaborate compared to the humility that has always characterized Francis," he said. This comment highlights the personality of the Pope, known for his simplicity and his closeness to the people. Remo added that, although he is a distant relative, he is convinced that Francis would have preferred an even simpler funeral, in line with his way of life.

A moment of prayer and reflection

At the end of the live broadcast of the funeral, those present went to the small church of Cabella Ligure, where they were able to pay homage to the memory of the Holy Father. Remo rang the bell, a symbolic gesture to remember and honor Francis. The community united in prayer, reciting the rosary, led by the parish priest Don Jairo Alzate Ocampo. This moment of reflection represented a way to feel even closer to the Pope, underlining the importance of the community in keeping his memory alive.
