Pope Francis Meets Young Prisoners With a Smile

The donation of 200 thousand euros for the pasta factory in the Casal del Marmo prison

A significant gesture for the prison community

Pope Francis has once again demonstrated his commitment to the most vulnerable, donating 200 euros to Msgr. Benoni Ambarus, head of charity and prison ministry in Rome. This sum will be used to support the pasta factory at the Casal del Marmo juvenile prison, an initiative that not only offers job opportunities to young inmates, but also helps reduce the price of the pasta produced, making it accessible to a wider public.

The story of Msgr. Ambarus

The bishop, affectionately called 'Don Ben', shared his emotion regarding this gesture. "I told him that we have a large mortgage for this pasta factory and if we can pay it off we will lower the price of pasta, sell more and hire more boys," he explained. The Pope's response was immediate and generous: "I have almost finished all the money but I still have some in my account." This exchange highlights not only the Pope's availability, but also his deep understanding of the needs of the prison community.

A special bond with the inmates

Bishop Ambarus recalled significant moments spent with Pope Francis, such as the opening of the Holy Door in Rebibbia, an event that marked a moment of great emotion for the inmates. “When the Pope said: ‘Don Ben come with me’ and together they began the Jubilee, it was a moment of great meaning for everyone,” he said. The inmates felt ‘seen’ and recognized, an experience that left a deep imprint on their lives.

Remembering Pope Francis

The death of Pope Francis has sparked an outpouring of emotion among inmates, many of whom have expressed a desire to honor his memory. “I keep getting messages from people who say they feel like orphans,” revealed Msgr. Ambarus. Some inmates have even asked to place a flower on the Pope’s tomb, a symbolic gesture that represents the special bond that had been created between them and the Pontiff. The bishop also announced that he is working to ensure that Francis’ “favorite children” can attend the funeral, a further sign of respect and recognition for his work.
