Preparations for the Enthronement
Rome is preparing for a major event: the inauguration ceremony of Pope Leo XIV, which will take place on Sunday in St. Peter's Square. This event attracts the attention not only of the faithful, but also of local authorities who are implementing extraordinary security measures.
The prefect of Rome, Lamberto Giannini, has already announced a ban on navigation on the Tiber River near the Vatican, along with a “no-fly zone” to ensure air safety and counter drone activity.
Strengthened security measures
The security plan includes the presence of divers and snipers from the police force, with a deployment of approximately 6 agents, supported by a thousand volunteers. Security will be guaranteed through three security areas and rigorous checks for access to the maximum security zone. Five pre-filtering checkpoints and metal detector checks are planned to ensure that the event takes place without incident.
Influx of faithful and delegations
Over 200 foreign official delegations are expected in Rome, with at least 250 faithful expected to attend the ceremony. For those unable to enter St. Peter's Square, large screens will be set up in Piazza Risorgimento and Piazza Cavour, allowing everyone to follow the event live. The main airports and public transport stations will also be under surveillance, to ensure an orderly and safe flow of participants.
Traffic management and mobility
In view of the event, Anas has announced an increase in road surveillance to manage the increase in traffic towards the Capital. Seven operational units are planned along the Grande Raccordo Anulare and Roma-Fiumicino motorways, to monitor traffic and address any critical issues. Users can check the evolution of the traffic situation in real time via the Anas “VAI” application, available on smartphones and tablets. Road safety is fundamental, and Anas reminds us of the importance of responsible driving, without distractions and under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
