The case of a woman from Salento
A 46-year-old woman, resident in a municipality in Southern Salento, lived a real nightmare following two weight-loss surgeries. Her story begins in December 2016, when, weighing 138 kilos and a mother of three children, she decided to undergo gastric resection surgery. The goal was clear: to improve her health and quality of life. However, the post-operative course was dramatic, characterized by continuous episodes of loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. After 14 months, her weight dropped to 76 kilos, but the situation did not improve.
A second intervention that worsens the situation
In June 2018, the woman decided to attempt a second operation, this time in a clinic in Bergamo, hoping for a better outcome. Unfortunately, her hopes were dashed: the patient was unable to ingest food or drink, and was forced to feed herself exclusively through a tube. This condition forced her into a long ordeal, with a devastating impact on her daily life and her family.
The legal battle for compensation
Faced with an unsustainable situation, the woman decides to turn to the court, assisted by her lawyer, to obtain compensation for the damages suffered. The medical board, during the preliminary technical assessment, proposes a settlement of 300 thousand euros, but both clinics and their respective insurance companies reject the offer. The judge, after examining the case, quantifies the damage suffered by the patient at 700 thousand euros, a record figure that highlights the seriousness of the complications and the responsibility of the healthcare facilities involved.
