Current situation of the Les Toules gallery
The Swiss Les Toules tunnel is currently undergoing repairs due to serious damage caused by an avalanche, which made the nearby Gran San Bernardo tunnel inaccessible. This event, which occurred last Thursday, led to the closure of the A21, blocking transit traffic between Italy and Switzerland.
According to initial estimates, the repair work will take approximately three working days, but the tunnel can only be reopened when operational safety is guaranteed.
Avalanche impact and safety measures
The avalanche caused significant damage, with rocks and trees swept down the valley, compromising a section of about 300 meters of infrastructure. At the moment, the thick snow cover makes it difficult to accurately assess the risk of further rockfalls along the avalanche slope. The Swiss Federal Roads Office has announced that, even after traffic resumes, traffic will be regulated in alternating one-way traffic using a construction traffic light, to allow the restoration work to continue.
Future prospects and updates
Urgent work was undertaken over the Easter weekend to ensure the tunnel was safe. The necessary repair materials have already been procured and transported to the site, and work began this morning. An update on the situation is expected before the weekend, to inform residents and travellers of the reopening times and safety conditions. The situation remains under close observation, with the aim of restoring traffic flow in the area as soon as possible.
