Rome, April 30 (askanews) – Germany's Social Democratic Party has approved the agreement with the conservative CDU/CSU union of future Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The announcement paves the way for Merz's coalition government to take office on Tuesday, May 6, with SPD co-chairman Lars Klingbeil set to become Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor.
“And at the suggestion of myself and Saskia Esken, the executive committee today instructed Lars Klingbeil to take over the role of vice chancellor and join the new government as federal finance minister. He was also unanimously given the task of forming this government team in the coming days, until May 5,” SPD secretary Matthias Miersch emphasized.
84,6% of members approved the coalition agreement with the CDU-CSU Union.
"Yes, there is skepticism and there are still unanswered questions. We will demonstrate, through government action, that this skepticism can be overcome, and even those who have now voted 'no' will finally understand that it was worth joining this government and fighting for fundamental social democratic values," Miersch stressed.
