Rome, Jan. 24 – (Adnkronos) – 19-year-old cyclist Sara Piffer died after being hit by a car during a training session in Trentino. The young cyclist died, despite receiving medical attention, from injuries sustained after a 70-year-old driver hit her in front of her brother who was accompanying her on the roads of Trentino. Piffer had been riding for the Continental Mendelspeck team since last year.
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Sara Piffer, a promising young athlete in Trentino cycling who lost her life in a terrible accident while training. – wrote Maurizio Fugatti, president of the autonomous province of Trento, on Facebook – In this moment of immense pain, my thoughts go to her family, friends and the entire community who had the privilege of knowing her".
The Association of Italian Professional Cyclists echoed Fugatti's sentiments on social media: "our thoughts go to the family of our member, to GS Mendelspeck, to her teammates in the group and to all those who today are torn apart by the pain of yet another life cut short by road violence."
