Rome, June 22 (askanews) – Sarah Michelle Gellar was one of the most applauded guests in this eighth edition of the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival. At Forte Village she was awarded the “Icon Award”. And Gellar is truly an icon, given that for many years she was the protagonist of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, the series that had incredible success between the end of the Nineties and the early XNUMXs.
And “Buffy” is about to return, with her still in the lead role, alongside her young colleague Ryan Armstrong, in a renewed project shared with director Chloe Zaho that should start soon, as the actress explained: “Kids today are very isolated, they spend their days glued to their devices, out of the world, looking at these retouched images. All of this causes more and more isolation, in a world where we are increasingly connected by technology and increasingly disconnected as human beings. And this is what The Scooby Gang in Buffy represented: young people who feel isolated, who don't understand that they actually have great strength, who can choose a family that makes them feel good. I think kids need this more than ever.”
The original “Buffy” series was also revolutionary in terms of female protagonists and today Geller says: “Before Buffy the only superhero on TV had been Wonderwoman but it was certainly difficult to identify with a superwoman who came from the Amazon, whereas teenagers, in any kind of normal environment, could easily relate to my character. She was someone they could learn something from, much more than from a superheroine of course”.
