Palermo, 6 Feb. (Adnkronos) – "The presence of mafia crime and corruption, particularly in the landfill sector, is widely proven by sector investigations, but above all by the measures of the judicial authorities, in some cases very recent". This is the complaint of the Sicilian Governor, Renato Schifani, heard by the Ecomafia Commission. "As confirmation of this, it should be noted that two companies operating in the sector, subjected to anti-mafia prevention measures (a few months ago the Catania Court pronounced the confiscation), which belonged to the same business group, have started legal proceedings against the commissioner structure to obtain the annulment (accompanied by the request for suspension) of the order approving the waste plan - explains Schifani - This demonstrates that, beyond the full regularity of the appeals endorsed by the judicial custodians to protect the assets of the confiscated companies, the sector is subject to strong pollution from mafia crime. This requires, however, to move forward quickly towards the progressive transformation of a system that is now inefficient and harmful, knowing full well that the interposition of obstacles and reactions, as creeping as they are obvious, of some sectors that have enjoyed a parasitic income on the delays of the system to modernization initiatives are not and will not be long in coming".

"The path already started will be able to achieve the objectives set to free Sicily from the grip of an irrational use of waste, to transform into a productive and energy resource, protecting the environment, what is still today a cost and a burden for the community", he concludes.
