Taiwan on alert for typhoon Kong-Rey: initial toll is one dead and 73 injured

One dead and 73 injured in Taiwan due to super typhoon Kong-Rey, which hit the island this morning

Il typhoon Kong-Rey reached the east coast in Chenggong Town in Taitung County at 13:40 local time, 6:40 a.m. in Italy, the Central Weather Administration said.

This is one of the most powerful storms to hit the island in recent years. It has been recorded violent winds, which exceeded 200 km/h, and torrential rains.

According to the United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center, Kong-Rey is more powerful than Gaemi, the typhoon that hit Taiwan last July, which was already considered the most powerful in the last 8 years.

Typhoon Kong-Rey in Taiwan: Schools and offices closed

Schools and offices have been closed and tens of thousands of soldiers have been preemptively mobilized to await developments. Meanwhile, the eastern Chinese province of Fujian is on high alert and has halted rail and maritime connections. 

According to the latest news, more than a metre of rain could fall in the most affected regions by Friday, forcing to evacuation precautionary of thousands of residents in the most vulnerable areas.
