A well-orchestrated deception
In recent days, an alarming case of fraud has hit several Italian entrepreneurs, exploiting the name of the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto. The requests for money, which reach up to one million euros, were made to well-known professionals, who, believing they were receiving an authentic call, fell into the net of a well-crafted deception. The scam is based on a sensitive topic: the alleged release of journalists kidnapped in the Middle East, a topic that immediately arouses concern and empathy.
The modus operandi of scammers
The mechanism of the scam was revealed by Crosetto himself, who shared his experience to warn other potential targets. The entrepreneurs were initially contacted by a secretary, followed by a phone call from a so-called general. The request for money was justified by the need for additional funds for ongoing negotiations, even promising that the money would be returned through Bankitalia. This scheme led to large transfers to foreign accounts, making the situation even more worrying.
Investigations underway
The Milan Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into aggravated fraud, coordinated by prosecutor Giovanni Tarzia. Investigators are trying to trace the funds already transferred abroad, to countries such as England, Holland and Hong Kong. At the moment, several complaints have been registered, but it is estimated that the number of victims could be much higher. Crosetto stressed the importance of making the story public to prevent other entrepreneurs from falling into the trap. The speed with which the scammers operated has raised concerns about the security of communications and the improper use of public identities.
