A bold and ruthless hit. A 48-year-old postal worker ended up in trouble after being discovered by the Carabinieri. The woman, now suspended, is accused of stealing about 40 euros from the bank accounts of vulnerable customers. Her victims were mostly elderly, disabled and foreigners, fragile people who bore the brunt of a well-orchestrated scam.
The methods of theft
The investigations, conducted by the Ghilarza and Abbasanta Stations, revealed an alarming modus operandi. The employee was impersonating account holders, canceling Postepay cards and accessing postal savings books. Using documents already known to her, she was able to withdraw sums of money fraudulently. Since the beginning of 2024, numerous complaints have triggered an investigation that has brought this scandal to light. "She simulated transactions that were never carried out, deceiving customers and robbing them," explain the Carabinieri.
A network of victims
The victims, unaware of what was happening, began to realize the unauthorized withdrawals only when they found themselves with negative accounts or even closed credit cards. "We didn't know who to turn to," says an elderly woman, visibly shaken. "I trusted the Post Office, I would never have imagined something like this." The evidence collected
During the search of the suspect's home, the Carabinieri found compromising material. An identity card and a health card registered to third parties, along with photocopies of documents and a diary containing Postepay card numbers matched to the names of the cardholders. "A disturbing picture, which demonstrates the premeditation of these acts," commented the police.
An ingenious system
The employee did not limit herself to operating alone. To divert suspicion, she often used the workstations of absent colleagues. A clever trick, but it was not enough to stop the investigation. "It was a well-conceived plan, but in the end the justice system closed in," say investigators.
