Three Carabinieri officers die in an explosion at a farmhouse near Verona.

Milan, October 14 (askanews) – Three arrests have been made following the tragic overnight explosion at a farmhouse in Castel d'Azzano, Verona. A devastating explosion killed three Carabinieri officers during an operation to clear a farmhouse occupied by three brothers. Those killed in the line of duty were Brigadier Chief Special Qualification Valerio Daprà, Selected Carabiniere Davide Bernardello, and Lieutenant Special Charge Marco Piffari.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and the Chief of Police visited the General Headquarters to show solidarity with the Carabinieri following the deaths of three officers in the province of Verona. The minister announced the three arrests and expressed his sympathy to the Carabinieri. Piantedosi then highlighted several aspects of the tragic explosion: "The dynamics leave us stunned. It was unimaginable that there could be such a level of aggression, to which the unfortunate three Carabinieri were victims," he said.

"In the past, it was somewhat understood that we were dealing with people who would resist in some way, but it seems that there was even a mediation intervention. The Carabinieri sent expert mediators to speak with the occupants, and there was a contact that seemed to have heralded a peaceful resolution. So it appears to have been a truly treacherous, almost premeditated act."

But these are preliminary reconstructions, then it is right that the investigators do their job, added the Minister of the Interior.

President Sergio Mattarella expressed his shock and sorrow. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on X: "It is with deep sorrow that I learn of the tragic death of three Carabinieri and the injury of thirteen others, including members of the Carabinieri, firefighters, and police... My condolences, and those of the Government, go to the families of the victims." Defense Minister Guido Crosetto expressed his sympathy to the Commander-in-Chief of the Carabinieri, General Salvatore Luongo, "assuring the Defense Department of its full and concrete support at this very painful time."
