Rome, March 18 (Adnkronos/Labitalia) – Thursday, March 20, 2025, on the occasion of National University Day, promoted by the Crui (Conference of Italian University Rectors) and Anci, the University of Rome Tor Vergata adheres to the 'Universities Revealed' initiative, opening its botanical garden to middle and high school students, citizens and the university community for an immersive experience in research on sustainability and the protection of biodiversity.
The initiative represents an opportunity for the University of Rome Tor Vergata to reveal a place not known to everyone in the area, but of great scientific and educational value, bringing the younger generations and citizens closer to environmental awareness.
In particular, schools will have the opportunity to let students discover how botanical research can offer concrete solutions for the protection of the ecosystem and understand the active role that every citizen must have in respecting the environment.
The day will open at 10.30:XNUMX with an online conference on Microsoft Teams, with speeches by Nathan Levialdi Ghiron, rector of the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Antonella Canini, vice-rector for the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Transition, Rosaria Alvaro, vice-rector for Social Innovation Policies, and Nicola Franco, president of the VI Municipio.
"The Universities Revealed initiative is an opportunity to open the doors of knowledge and show the value of scientific research for society. On this day we want to make a key place of our University accessible to everyone: the Botanical Garden. A heritage of biodiversity and research that we make available to schools and citizens, to raise awareness of the importance of environmental protection and sustainability", declared the rector Nathan Levialdi Ghiron.
The program includes two free guided tours, at 11.00:16.00 and XNUMX:XNUMX, during which students, citizens and the academic community will be able to explore the botanical collections, observe the preserved plant species up close and learn about the active research projects for the conservation of biodiversity and environmental regeneration. In addition to the guided tours, itinerant lessons will be organized, in which participants will be able to delve into themes related to sustainability, applied botany and the environmental impact of human activities, thanks to the guidance of experts and researchers from the University.
"The botanical garden of Rome Tor Vergata is a research, conservation and training center, where the study of plants becomes a key element for environmental sustainability and green biotechnology. With this initiative we want to convey to the youngest the importance of biodiversity, showing how science can offer concrete tools for the protection of the ecosystem. Botanical knowledge is not just study, but an action of responsibility towards our planet", explained Antonella Canini, vice-rector for the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Transition.
During the activities, participants will have the opportunity to understand the role of plants in everyday life, from sustainable agriculture to urban regeneration through native species, and to discover how everyone can contribute to safeguarding the environment with small daily gestures. The botanical garden is not only a research center, but a bridge between the university and the territory, a place that preserves a precious heritage of biodiversity and scientific innovation. The Università Svelate initiative represents a unique opportunity to discover this space and to reflect on the ecological challenges of the present and the future.
"The university must be an active part of society, promoting dialogue and awareness of the great challenges we face. With the Università Svelate initiative we want to create an opportunity for growth for the youngest, so that this experience becomes the starting point for a path of responsibility and attention towards the world around us. We want to tell and show concretely how universities are a collective heritage, open to all and oriented towards the future", underlined Rosaria Alvaro, vice-rector for Social Innovation Policies.
This day is not only an opportunity to visit a special place, but an opportunity to look at nature with different eyes. Every step among the plants of the botanical garden can become the first towards a greater environmental awareness, to be taken with you well beyond this experience.
