Agcom requests correct information on the referendums of June 8 and 9.

Agcom's appeal to Rai

The Council of the Communications Regulatory Authority (Agcom) has recently adopted a warning against Rai and all providers of audiovisual and radio media services active at the national level. This warning was issued in light of monitoring data that highlight the need to ensure adequate information coverage on the five issues covered by the referendums scheduled for 8 and 9 June.

Agcom underlines the importance of providing citizens with correct, impartial and complete information regarding the referendum questions and the reasons supporting the different voting options.

Objectives of the recall

The note from Agcom clarifies that the main objective of this reminder is to ensure that broadcasters comply with the provisions of the Authority's resolution no. 102/25/Cons. In particular, with regard to Rai, compliance with the provision of the Parliamentary Commission for the general direction and supervision of radio and television services is required. Both regulations, which govern referendums, place particular emphasis on the need to adequately address referendum issues, in order to ensure complete and impartial information on the questions proposed.

The responsibilities of broadcasters

Broadcasters are required to ensure that the information provided to citizens is not only correct, but also balanced, so as to allow for informed and conscious information. This reminder by Agcom represents an important step to protect the right of citizens to receive accurate and complete information, especially in a crucial period such as that of the referendums. The responsibility of broadcasters is therefore fundamental for the proper functioning of democracy and for the correct exercise of the right to vote.
