Rome, Nov. 14 (Adnkronos/Labitalia) – Airbnb has long supported the adoption of a national regulation to regulate short-term rentals in Italy and has welcomed the new registration system for tourist accommodation facilities and properties for short-term or tourist rentals. The platform has therefore informed all Italian hosts of the obligation to register with the Ministry of Tourism and of its intention to remove listings without a national identification code (Cin) by 2025. To support hosts with compliance, Airbnb has activated a dedicated helpline in collaboration with the Altroconsumo association, provides regular notifications and reminders via the application, and launched a campaign to offer additional guidelines and resources.

Valentina Reino, head of public policy at Airbnb Italy, commented: “The Cin represents a simplified and more usable solution for hosts compared to fragmented local regulations, and will allow authorities to have greater transparency on the size of home hospitality in different geographical areas. We are happy to continue collaborating with the Ministry of Tourism in this transition phase from regional codes to the national identification code, with the common goal of a smooth implementation for the benefit of hosts, cities and the country.”

The vast majority of Italian hosts on the platform are ordinary families who use Airbnb to generate supplemental income, with an average annual income of around €4.000 in 2023. Two-thirds (67%) of hosts say that hosting on Airbnb helps them cope with the rising cost of living, and three-quarters (76%) say that renting is not their primary occupation. Earlier this year, Airbnb introduced new tools for hosts to automatically withhold taxes from Airbnb and pay them directly to the Revenue Agency. Airbnb is also working with several cities on tourist tax and regions that want to incentivize tourism to help distribute the benefits of travel more equitably across the country.
