Bologna Marconi Airport faced a difficult afternoon due to an intense temporal which hit the city and the surrounding plain, causing flooding in places such as San Giovanni in Persiceto and Castelfranco.

During the most critical phase, landings were diverted to alternative airports, including Bergamo, Venice, Malpensa and Pisa, while an Emirates flight was directed to Rome Fiumicino. About a dozen flights were diverted and several planes remained waiting on the runway for take-off. Airport authorities later reported improved conditions and regular air traffic resumed.

A strong wave of thunderstorms accompanied by wind, lightning, Cloudbursts and hail are hitting Emilia, affecting a large area that goes from Parma to Bologna. In Fiorano Modenese there were flooding widespread following an intense downpour, with rainfall peaks of up to 80 mm recorded on the surrounding hills.

Numerous damages and inconveniences have been reported in many locations, so much so that some municipalities, through social media channels, have invited the population to limit their movements. This is the case of Sassuolo e Maranello, where it was highlighted how the extraordinary rainfall had caused significant difficulties in the area.

Also the Municipality of formigine has issued a warning, reporting that the storm is causing flooding and a rise in stream levels. In Bolognese ("Meat" Sauce), the Municipality of Monte San Pietro has launched a warning message, recommending citizens to pay maximum attention.

Dozens of interventions are underway by the Fire Brigade to empty flooded premises, secure buildings and remove dangerous trees. A tree fell on the provincial road 7 between Concordia and Fossa, causing the closure to traffic. Other fallen trees have made it necessary to close the underpass on provincial road 15 in Marzaglia and have partially blocked the carriageway on provincial road 14 in Altolà. In Castelfranco Emilia, also hit by hail, the underpasses of via Costa and via per Piumazzo are closed.

In the Modena area, rainfall data recorded accumulations of up to 80 mm, with significant flooding in Fiorano Modenese and Sassuolo. In the Bologna and Ravenna areas, there were also problems, while Bologna's Marconi Airport suffered flight diversions during the most critical phase of the storm.

In the meantime, the railway line Bologna-Piacenza was temporarily suspended between Reggio Emilia and San Ilario d'Enza due to damage to the power line caused by the wind. A replacement bus service was activated between Parma and Reggio Emilia and some Frecce were diverted to the high-speed line, skipping some stops.

The situation is being monitored with the utmost attention by the authorities, who are calling for avoid unnecessary travel.
