The Big Brother Debate
Big Brother, one of the most followed reality shows in Italy, continues to stir controversy and heated debates. Recently, the writer and intellectual Barbara Alberti intervened in the program TvTalk, expressing her opinion against the moralism that surrounds the program. Alberti underlined how the reality show is often the object of criticism from a part of the public and some analysts, who consider it vulgar and constructed.
However, the writer did not hesitate to defend the format, stating that educating reality is a “sesquipedalian stupidity”.
The critique of moralism
During her appearance on TvTalk, Alberti questioned the moralism surrounding Big Brother, stating that those who don't like the program should simply avoid it. "Mortalism has become an industry," she said, highlighting how the reality show represents a game with very specific rules. The writer also revealed that host Alfonso Signorini no longer wants to see her, due to her withdrawal from the program in 2020, but reiterated how much fun her experience inside the house had been.
The responsibilities of reality
The debate was not limited to Alberti alone. Journalist Grazia Sambruna also expressed her point of view, calling the current edition of Big Brother “unsalvageable” and stressing that measures should have been taken earlier. According to Sambruna, both the network and the company are responsible, particularly regarding situations of disqualification that are part of the regulation. On the other hand, television critic Riccardo Bocca stated that the problem is not educating reality, but rather that Big Brother has educated the worst, suggesting that the program's cycle may have come to an end.
