Milan, 13 June (askanews) – More than 300 people have died in a plane crash near Ahmedabad airport in India, but the toll is only provisional. On Thursday 12 June, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner headed for London crashed shortly after takeoff from the airport, crashing into the roof of a medical student dormitory.
Only one person survived among the 254 passengers and crew on board the plane.
Volunteers who rushed to the aid of victims in the first minutes after the Air India Boeing crash described the hell that unfolded before their eyes.
“When we went there, we saw dead bodies everywhere. They were in pieces. Completely burned. We recovered living people from the student residence. We didn’t think anyone was alive. Everywhere there were just bodies, parts, parts of bodies,” said a witness.
“The bodies were completely burned. Some were missing a leg or a forehead. Everything was completely burned. It was like coal.”
“I was scared and didn’t understand what had happened,” a worker said. “Was it a bomb explosion? Then I saw the wreckage of the plane. There was black smoke everywhere. The sky was just black. My eyes were burning.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the injured in hospital as authorities sought to uncover the cause of the plane crash, which crashed just 28 seconds after takeoff, a mile and a half from the runway. One of the plane's two black boxes has now been recovered.
