Explosion in Calenzano on December 9, 2024
The explosion which occurred on 9 December 2024 at the Eni plant in Calenzano, in the province of Florence, was a tragic accident that caused the death of five people and the wounding of 26 others.
Explosion in Calenzano, important developments: notices of investigation to Eni and other executives
Following of the accident, the Prato prosecutor's office has started un'inchiesta, notifying notices of investigation to several managers of Eni and the contractor Sergen. Eni itself is also under investigation for administrative liability. The charges range from multiple manslaughter to manslaughter and personal injury.
According to the prosecutor Luca Tescaroli, the investigations revealed that Eni SpA had objective responsibility for the accident. The four explosions were a “foreseeable and avoidable event” based on investigative findings.
The company is accused of administrative offence also because of one of the suspects, who allegedly tried to hinder the investigation. In particular, a document folder dating back to January 27, more than a month after the explosion, was found. The folder, which emerged during a search on January 31, 2025, would contain documents in which Eni orders Sergen to remove two valves in a crucial area, the one where the failure that caused the explosion began.
“Such documentation should not have been there downstream, more than a month after the explosion. And not discovering it immediately could have hindered the investigation,” the prosecutor stressed.
Among the suspects, as reported by Il Post, appear Luigi Collurà, head of security at the Calenzano depot, Patrizia Boschetti, manager of the operational structure of the Eni Center in Rome, and Emanuela Proietti, head of the protection and prevention service at Eni. Also under investigation are Francesco Cirone and Luigi Murno, respectively head of the prevention and protection service and head of the activities of Sergen, the company based in Potenza, Basilicata.
