In recent days, the cities of Rome and Bologna have been the scene of demonstrations that have sparked heated debate. The president of the Union of Italian Jewish Communities, Noemi Di Segni, has expressed her concern about the instrumental use of certain public spaces to convey forms of social protest. According to Di Segni, such events not only undermine the legitimacy of law enforcement, but also risk fueling anti-Semitic sentiments. Her statement is a clear signal of the need for reflection and responsibility on the part of all the protagonists involved.
Instrumentalization and anti-Semitism
Di Segni stressed that the use of symbols and references to Judaism in protest contexts can have devastating consequences. “Using Israel and Judaism because it further inflames people’s spirits creates a very serious precedent,” he said. This type of instrumentalization not only distorts the meaning of the demonstrations, but also contributes to a dangerous narrative that can lead to acts of violence and discrimination. The Italian Jewish community therefore finds itself having to face a dual challenge: defending its rights and, at the same time, fighting against hatred and misinformation.
Request for concrete actions
In such a delicate moment, Di Segni urged the mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, to take concrete measures to address the situation. “It is useless for him to just send his solidarity, first of all he must remove the Palestinian flag from his building,” he said. This request highlights the need for a more active and responsible approach by local authorities. The Italian Jewish community calls not only for words of support, but also for actions that can guarantee the safety and dignity of all citizens, regardless of their origin or beliefs.
