A tragic accident at work
A 41-year-old Romanian woodcutter lost his life in a tragic accident that occurred late this afternoon in the Digola forest area, near Sappada, in Friuli. The man was hit by a log that, during the transfer operations with a cableway, bounced, hitting him fatally.
Despite timely interventions, resuscitation attempts by the Pieve di Cadore helicopter rescue team were in vain.
The difficulties of evacuation
The accident occurred in an area that is particularly difficult to reach, characterized by a depression that complicated the evacuation operations by land. The Alpine Rescue (Cnsas) specified that the ground teams, composed of ten technicians from the Alpine Rescue of Sappada and soldiers from the Guardia di Finanza, were forced to use special equipment to transport the body. The situation required the intervention of a second helicopter, equipped with a barycentric hook, to facilitate the removal of the body.
Safety in the forestry sector
This tragic event has brought renewed attention to safety in the forestry sector, a field of work that presents numerous risks. Workplace accidents, especially those involving heavy equipment and log handling operations, are unfortunately frequent. It is essential that companies in the sector adopt rigorous safety measures and adequately train their staff to prevent such tragedies. The local community and the competent authorities are called upon to consider how to improve working conditions and ensure the safety of forestry workers.
