Fear at the Milan Polytechnic, the chemistry lab evacuated: "Risk of explosion"

Afternoon of fear at the Polytechnic University of Milan in via Mancinelli.

After a refrigerator breaking, it was necessary to evacuate the laboratory chemistry and the entire area affected by the risk of explosion. Inside the broken refrigerator there are in fact approximately five grams of diazonium salts, substance that must be stored below 5 degrees. With the refrigerator broken these salts could therefore create a deflagration. The technical staff and students present were made to leave the building in order to secure the area and proceed with the decontamination operations of the refrigerator. At the end of the decontamination the salts will be detonated. Both the Fire Department and the bomb squad arrived on site immediately.

Second accident in eight days

As we have seen it was a scary afternoon at Polytechnic of Milan after the breakage of a refrigerator containing diazonium salts. Only a week ago, a 54 year old researcher from the Polytechnic he lost a thumb after an ampoule exploded while he was handling hypophosphorous acid and nitrogen salts in a laboratory in via Mancinelli.
