Emanuele Parsi of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan gave a crucial opinion on the future role of Europe in the international landscape during a conference held at the Auditorium della Cultura Friulana. The scholar stressed that Europe, which played a key role in the international liberal order especially during the late Cold War and the post-Cold War era, now faces a major challenge. According to Parsi, Europe must recognize that a significant part of the world wants to take a different path. In this context, it is essential that Europe moves towards centralized decision-making and the development of material capabilities in all sectors. If Europe does not take this step, the future consequences will be severe. The current period is a historic crossroads for the European Union, as demonstrated by the European elections and the rise of populist parties of the right and left that criticize globalism. In this scenario, the outcome of the US elections will play a crucial role: according to Parsi, the issue is not so much whether a president in tune with our ideological positions wins, but rather whether he does not conflict with Italian and European interests. In this regard, Parsi considers Harris a better option than Trump.
For Parsi, Europe has the task of finalizing the centralization of decision-making power.
