The debate on the crisis in Gaza
During the Prime Minister's Question Time at the Chamber of Deputies, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni firmly addressed questions regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In response to Angelo Bonelli of Avs, Meloni stressed the urgency of finding a solution to end hostilities and respect international law.
“The situation in Gaza is increasingly dramatic and unjustifiable,” he said, calling for open dialogue with regional leaders and international partners.
Meloni reiterated the importance of working on a reconstruction plan proposed by Arab countries, highlighting how the Italian government is trying to maintain a constructive, albeit critical, dialogue with Israel. The president clarified that it is not the government's intention to recall the Italian ambassador to Israel, underlining the importance of a diplomatic approach.
Military spending and opposition criticism
The debate further heated up when Giuseppe Conte, leader of the M5S, questioned Meloni about the RearmEu plan, accusing the government of prioritizing military spending over citizens' needs. Meloni responded with a criticism of Conte's anti-militarist passion, recalling that during his term as Prime Minister, he had not opposed the increase in military spending.
“Italians are more intelligent than you think and they know how to recognize those who act for personal gain,” Meloni said, defending the government's choices and underlining that the increase in defense spending had also been agreed with the opposition. The president then called for a constructive discussion, underlining that Italians will be the ones to judge the two political proposals.
Public health in crisis
Another hot topic addressed by Meloni was public health. The secretary of the Democratic Party, Elly Schlein, denounced the collapse of the health system, highlighting the long waiting lists and the increase in health migration. Meloni responded by defending the government's actions, stating that the National Health Fund is at its highest level ever and that the government is trying to guarantee efficient health care.
“It is not the government's fault if there are problems in healthcare, but it is necessary that everyone does their part,” Meloni said, inviting the Regions to collaborate to improve the healthcare service. The president also announced the dispatch of over 13.500 units of law enforcement to enhance security in the territories, underlining the government's commitment to protecting citizens.
