The debate on the crisis in Gaza
During the Prime Minister's Question Time at the Chamber of Deputies, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni addressed questions related to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Meloni underlined the importance of an open dialogue with the leaders of the Region and reiterated the need to respect international law.
“The situation in Gaza is dramatic and unjustifiable,” he said, calling for the urgency of finding a solution to the conflict. He also highlighted Italy’s role in promoting a reconstruction plan, saying the government will continue to work with European partners and the United States to reach a lasting agreement.
Criticisms of European rearmament
Another hot topic of the debate was the European rearmament plan, raised by the leader of the M5S, Giuseppe Conte. Meloni responded to criticism regarding the increase in military spending, recalling that the Italian government has inherited a commitment already signed. "Italians know how to recognize who acts out of conviction and who for profit," she said, defending the government's choices. The president also stressed that the government is not trying to pass the buck, but is trying to do its part to ensure efficient and fast healthcare.
Public health under pressure
The issue of public health came up strongly during the debate. PD secretary Elly Schlein accused the government of dismantling public health, highlighting long waiting lists and health migration. Meloni responded by defending the increase in the National Health Fund, saying it is at its highest level ever. She called for a discussion based on data and facts, stressing that the government is doing everything it can to improve the health situation, despite the difficulties inherited.
