Giorgia Meloni in Tirana: European Summit and Geopolitical Challenges

Giorgia Meloni during the European summit in Tirana

Italian PM discusses peace in Ukraine and integration of Western Balkans

Warm welcome in Tirana

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni received a warm welcome in Tirana, where she attended the sixth summit of the European Political Community. This meeting, organized by Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, saw the presence of 47 European leaders, all united to address the current challenges of the continent.

The war in Ukraine has been the central focus, with peace talks continuing to be hampered by the absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Italy's position on the war in Ukraine

During the summit, Meloni stressed the importance of distinguishing between those who want peace and those who, on the contrary, seem to be hindering it. “We must insist on an unconditional ceasefire,” the prime minister said, highlighting the need for a collective effort to resolve the conflict. Her position reflects a pragmatic approach, aimed at ensuring stability in Europe and promoting constructive dialogue between the nations involved.

Integration of the Western Balkans as a strategic priority

In addition to the Ukrainian issue, Meloni highlighted the importance of the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union. She defined this process as a “strategic investment for Europe,” stressing that the stability of the region is crucial for the security and prosperity of the entire continent. Together with Rama, she also discussed the implementation of the Italy-Albania protocol on migrants, a topic of great relevance that has attracted the attention of Brussels.

Italy and the meeting of the "willing"

Despite the importance of the summit, Meloni ruled out Italy's participation in the meeting of the so-called "willing ones," a group of countries willing to take bolder initiatives in response to the crisis. "That's not our approach," she explained, highlighting a more cautious and thoughtful strategy by the Italian government. This decision could reflect a desire to maintain a balanced position in international relations, avoiding compromising internal stability and strategic alliances.
