Mary Rosaria Boccia, a businesswoman from Campania and a figure who has already emerged in the case involving the former Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, has ended up under investigation. The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating her for forgery, fraud and appropriation of academic works: at the centre of the investigation, the degree with which he aspired to an institutional role.
Investigations on Maria Rosaria Boccia for forgery and fraud: all the doubts about her degree
Le investigations, still in the initial stages, involve three universities: the Pegaso telematic university, the Parthenope of Naples and the Luiss Guido Carli of Rome, all considered injured parties. The Guardia di Finanza has acquired the documentation kept in the offices of the respective academic institutions.
The investigation would start from an internal report of Pegaso University, who is the injured party in the affair, and led the Prosecutor's Office to open two separate investigative lines.
Furthermore, the University declares that following a news report in which some doubts were raised regarding the authenticity of Ms. Boccia's degree thesis, the University had started the appropriate checks on the title and the thesis, in full compliance with the principles of transparency, fairness and confidentiality, adopting the most appropriate measures in accordance with current regulations and the interests involved.
The first one would concern a unsigned substitute declaration, attached by Maria Rosaria Boccia when she transferred from Parthenope to Pegaso in 2020. The declaration was used to have her previously taken exams recognized, but it was not verified by the university. Boccia then obtained a degree in Economics and Management in 2023 with a grade of 91/110.
The second strand would focus on a thesis presented at Luiss, suspected of being largely copied from a paper written by another student, completely unconnected to the matter, in 2019. The investigators requested a copy of the supposedly “original” work from the university for a direct comparison. The suspicion of plagiarism emerged following a television report broadcast by “Rete 4” on September 9, 2024, which had compared the two texts using anti-plagiarism software.
In this regard, the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has entered Maria Rosaria Boccia in the register of suspects with the accusations of forgery, fraud and improper attribution of other people's worksThe investigations are being conducted by the financial police of the economic-financial police unit of Naples, who have acquired documents and materials from the universities involved.
Maria Rosaria Boccia announces lawsuits against the press
The entrepreneur Maria Rosaria Boccia announced that this morning it had filed the first complaints against some newspapers and individual journalists, accused of having spread information that you believe is false, distorted or manipulated. According to his statements, he considers himself the victim of a real media persecution, which – in his opinion – would have contributed to fuel a climate of unfounded public hostility.
Boccia also harshly criticized the press for not giving space to his previous complaints regarding alleged illicit use of public funds, calling the silence maintained on those facts "unacceptable". He then announced his intention to file formal complaints with the Order of Journalists and the territorially competent prosecutors, asking that investigations be launched against those who, in his opinion, had contributed to damaging his image.
Finally, she raised questions about the different treatment given by the media to her case, compared to the one – which she defined as more relevant – concerning a stalking investigation currently underway at the Public Prosecutor's Office, which would involve former minister Gennaro Sangiuliano in relation to facts that directly concern her. Boccia wondered why no newspaper had investigated or verified the status of that investigation, arguing that media attention had instead been monopolized by sensationalist reconstructions about her person.
"If freedom of the press is exercised only when it is convenient for the powerful, then it is no longer freedom, but complicity.. We'll see if, this time, someone will find the courage to tell what has been kept hidden until now.“, he concludes.
