Tel Aviv, April 24 (askanews) – Israel stopped for two minutes, sirens blaring across the nation in tribute to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis during World War II. To mark Holocaust Remembrance Day in Tel Aviv, drivers and protesters holding portraits of Hamas hostages stood still for two minutes.
The official ceremonies began on Wednesday evening with a state event at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem, attended by President Isaac Herzog, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other senior officials.
The commemoration, which takes place annually in April or May according to the Jewish calendar, is separate from International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is observed on January 27.
