Kenya, teammate who set fire to athlete Cheptegei dies

In Moi Hospital, Kenya, the former boyfriend and murderer of the Ugandan athlete has disappeared Rebecca Cheptegei, after being burned alive by Dickson Ndiema Marangach himself. According to Dr Owen Menach of the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret city, it is true that he died from the burns on more than 30% of the body.

The burns were caused by her boyfriend when he doused his partner with gasoline during an argument over the land where the woman's house had been built. The young marathon runner, who had participated in the Paris Olympics, lost her life on September 5 due to burns caused by her boyfriend's attack. The athlete had just returned to Kenya, where she lived with her family. Her partner, who had planned the attack, managed to enter her home in Endebess, in Trans-Nzoia County in the west of the country, taking advantage of the fact that her mother and children were in church. After the intervention of neighbors - who tried to stop him - the young woman was taken to hospital and admitted in serious condition with burns on 75% of her body. The news of Cheptegei's death was made public by Donald Rukare, president of the Ugandan Olympic Committee: “May her gentle soul rest in peace. We strongly condemn violence against women. This was a vile and senseless act that led to the loss of a great athlete.”, wrote on the X platform. According to a national survey, in 2022 at least 34% of women reported having experienced physical violence.
