Milan doubles reduced mowing areas for biodiversity

Green areas in Milan dedicated to reduced mowing

The Municipality's initiative to increase green areas and promote biodiversity in the city.

A significant increase in green areas

Milan has decided to double the areas with reduced mowing, going from 54 to 111 green spaces. This strategic choice aims to promote biodiversity, an increasingly central theme in the environmental policies of modern cities. The new areas, distributed throughout the Municipalities, cover a total surface area of approximately 1,8 million square meters, a significant contribution to the 19 million of urban green managed by the Municipality.

The environmental councilor, Elena Grandi, underlined the importance of these areas for the ecological health of the city.

The controversies and the administration's responses

Although the initiative was welcomed by many environmentalists, there has been controversy from citizens regarding the management of these areas. Some residents have complained about the presence of tall grass and unkempt vegetation, which they say compromises the aesthetics and functionality of public spaces. In response, Grandi clarified that the areas with reduced mowing were not chosen near condominiums, but in strategic areas to minimize the visual and practical impact. However, the perception of metropolitan jungles has raised questions about the management of urban greenery.

Benefits for biodiversity and the community

Low-mowing areas not only contribute to biodiversity, but also offer numerous benefits to the community. These spaces can become habitats for different species of insects, birds and plants, creating a richer and more diverse urban ecosystem. Furthermore, the reduction of regular maintenance allows to save economic resources and time, which can be reinvested in other ecological initiatives. The presence of flowerbeds with native trees and plants can also improve air quality and contribute to a more favorable microclimate.
