Million-dollar scams in the name of the Minister of Defense: Crosetto's warning

Million-dollar scam alert in the name of the Minister of Defense

Investigations underway into requests for money in the name of Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.

A well orchestrated scam

In recent days, Italy has been shaken by a mega-scam that has targeted wealthy entrepreneurs and professionals, with requests for money reaching tens of thousands of euros. The scammers pretend to be members of the staff of the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, contacting the victims via phone calls from numbers with a Roman area code, thus creating an appearance of credibility. The Milan Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a case against unknown persons, while the investigations are being entrusted to the Carabinieri, coordinated by the PM Giovanni Tarzia and the prosecutor Marcello Viola.

The mechanism of the scam

The scammers' modus operandi is quite simple but effective. They pose as ministry officials, trying to obtain personal information and, in some cases, requesting transfers of considerable sums. The victims, often successful entrepreneurs, are contacted with plausible stories that justify the requests for money. In some cases, the scams have been successful, with transfers made to bank accounts indicated by the so-called officials. Investigations are ongoing to reconstruct the entire system and understand the extent of the phenomenon.

Minister Crosetto's reaction

Minister Crosetto has publicly taken a stand against these scams, warning people through social media. “Serious scam in my name, no one should fall into the trap” is the message he spread, underlining the importance of making the facts known to prevent others from falling into the scammers’ net. Crosetto said he was contacted by an entrepreneur who, after receiving a call from a so-called general, made a transfer to an account provided by the latter. The situation was immediately reported to the competent authorities, who are working to stop this wave of scams.
