National Day in Memory of Covid Victims in Lombardy

Commemoration of Covid victims in Lombardy

On March 18, the bells will ring in mourning to honor the victims of the pandemic.

A tribute to the victims of Covid

A moment of collective reflection

The statement from the Lombardy Episcopal Conference underlines the importance of this gesture: “The wounds are too deep, the tears that the Covid pandemic has left in our lands are too widespread”. The choice of date is not accidental; March 18 marks the moment when the whole of Italy was shocked by the images of military trucks in Bergamo, carrying the coffins of the victims. This memory is a call to solidarity and resilience that characterized the response of the Lombard community during the darkest moments of the health crisis.

Initiatives throughout Italy

In addition to Lombardy, numerous initiatives are planned throughout the country to honor the victims of Covid. The autonomous province of Bolzano, for example, has announced that all flags will be flown at half-mast. Several mayors and regional presidents will lay wreaths in cemeteries, a symbolic gesture to not forget those who lost their lives due to the pandemic. These actions not only commemorate the victims, but also serve to strengthen the sense of community and unity in a time of great difficulty.

Memory as a tool for reconstruction

The Municipality of Bergamo has launched the initiative “Memory and discovery”, underlining the importance of memory as a necessary act to honor those who are no longer with us. Discovery, on the other hand, is seen as an opportunity to rework the collective and individual experience that Covid has represented. “Memory is the basis for rebuilding”, say local authorities, highlighting how the memory of the victims can become a source of strength to face future challenges.
