Overtaking ban for trucks on the A1, FAI to MIT: "Immediate stop and urgent discussion"

Freight transport in difficulty on the A1: FAI calls for sanctions to be suspended.

The FAI (Italian Road Haulers Federation) has sent an official letter to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and Autostrade per l'Italia (Autostrade per l'Italia) urging the immediate suspension of the overtaking ban for heavy vehicles on the A1 between Incisa-Reggello and Chiusi.

As well as stop it temporary sanctions and the urgent convening of a technical roundtable with industry representatives.

After a few days from the start of the experiment, Companies report delays in deliveries, long queues, difficulties in respecting driving and rest times and serious repercussions on the E45, already congested by diverted traffic.

“It is unacceptable that a still experimental measure is already subject to sanctions - declares Paolo Uggè, president of FAI - We cannot ask the sector for collaboration and at the same time penalize it with fines and restrictions that exacerbate its operational difficulties.”

The FAI also expresses strong concern about the growing climate of exasperation among truck drivers.

“We receive reports of anger and tiredness - adds Uggè - Some are talking about spontaneous protests, like slow marches or roadblocks. We don't agree with them, but the risk of tensions is real. We need to intervene immediately to restore dialogue and accountability.

The Federation therefore requests:

  • the immediate suspension of the overtaking ban;
  • the temporary suspension of sanctions;
  • the urgent convening of a technical roundtable with MIT, Autostrade per l'Italia, and industry representatives.

“Safety is a common goal – concludes Uggè – but it cannot be pursued with unilateral measures that compromise the sustainability of transport and the economy.”
