Rome, March 25 (Adnkronos) – No more double surnames, much less the traditional paternal surname: the new proposal is to give newborns only the mother's surname. It was presented by Dario Franceschini, who sees it as "compensation for a centuries-old injustice" towards women.

"I will present a bill to give children only their mother's surname," he announced this morning at the Assembly of the Democratic Party group in the Senate, convened to take stock of the items on the agenda at Palazzo Madama.

An initiative "in a personal capacity" and on which "I do not commit the Group", clarified the former minister who then explained the meaning of the initiative as a "compensation" for women, given that "for centuries" children have only had the father's surname. The bills on children's surnames are being discussed in the Senate Justice Committee, where texts have been presented by various parliamentary groups.

On social media, Franceschini then explained: "Children should only have their mother's surname. Instead of creating endless problems with the management of double surnames, after centuries in which children took their father's surname, we are establishing that with the new law they will only take their mother's surname. It's a simple thing and also compensation for a centuries-old injustice that not only had a symbolic value but was one of the cultural sources of gender inequality". There was no shortage of responses, such as that of Carlo Calenda who wrote on social media: "Don't we have any other priorities? Who knows".
